Rafael Nadal rankings idea

Sponsored Link
Rafael Nadal, the current World Number One, feels that calculating ATP points over 24 months rather than the current 12 months will lead to many benefits to future generations of tennis players.

He says that he will continue to argue the point as it would mean a more relaxed life for tennis players, prolong careers and decrease the effect of injuries on the rankings.

Do you think Rafa has a point and a change in calculating the ATP rankings would improve the game?

The clay court specialist is looking to win another French Open next month and protect his number 1 spot from Novak Djokovic who remains unbeaten in 2011.

The highly successful sisters, who between themselves have more than one hundred titles, have been sidelined with injuries and Serena has surrendered her number one ranking to Wozniacki in the meantime.

A return at the French Open is a possibility, particularly for Venus.

"The French Open is a great tournament. It's a fun event. We definitely want to be there. We're taking it week to week right now. Our goal is sooner than later," Venus Williams said.

Federer out, Nadal and Murray advance

Sponsored Link
Rafael Nadal set up a much anticipated semi final match up with Andy Murray at the Monte Carlo Masters following a straight sets win over Croatian Ivan Ljubicic (6-1, 6-3) on Friday.  In difficult windy condition, the Scot beat Frederico Gil in 2 sets. On the other side of the draw, Roger Federer lost to Jurgen Melzer and the Austrian willl now play David Ferrer for a place in the final.

Federer was not at his best against Melzer but said it was only the first week of the clay season and that he will improve. Melzer was visibly overjoyed with his achievement and has now beaten all of the "top three" in his career. This is what he said:

"I beat Rafa last year (in Shanghai). I have beaten Nole (Djokovic, in the French Open quarter-finals). So this was the one missing. I'm very happy I actually did it today. It was a tough match for me. He beat me three times last year and I didn't even win a set. But many things went well for me, my shots worked well. When he had break points I was calm and served well. I did well on the big points and played my game."

Djokovic out of Monaco

Sponsored Link
ATP world number 2, Novak Djokovic has pulled out of the first tournament of the clay season, the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco, with a knee injury. Over the last few weeks and months, you might have noticed the taping around Novak's knee and considering the amount of tennis he has played, this could be a good opportunity for him to give it a rest before the next phase of the season.

Djokovic, undefeated this year at 24-0 and the winner of the Australian Open, has not confirmed the severity of the injury or any potential return date. He said that he is disappointed as this tournament is one of his favourites. He added:

"It's a tough blow. Sad news not only for the tournament and my fans but also for myself."
